How this is computedUtah: state rates not verified, state tax left out.

Utah taxes individual income at a single flat rate, and the 2026 legislature cut that rate again through S.B. 60, retroactive to January 1, 2026. Utah has no standard deduction of its own: a nonrefundable taxpayer credit takes its place and phases out as income rises, which makes the effective marginal rate higher than the flat rate across the phase-out range. Because the Tax Commission's 2026 figures for that credit could not be read today, the calculator on this page leaves Utah income tax out and shows federal tax only. For a single filer with $75,000 of profit, federal income tax plus self-employment tax is about $15,495; the self-employment tax part alone is $10,597. LLC filing and renewal fees are set by the Division of Corporations in a yearly fee schedule. Utah follows the federal S election, and a partnership or S corporation can choose to pay Utah tax at the entity level. On federal numbers the S election saves about $5,312 at $120,000 of profit.

Utah's income tax rate has moved almost every year since 2022, and 2026 is no exception: S.B. 60, enrolled in the 2026 general session, lowered the individual and corporate rate again and made the change retroactive to January 1. A cut passed mid-year means withholding tables and estimates set earlier ran slightly high, which shows up as a smaller balance due or a refund in spring 2027.

A credit instead of a standard deduction

The structure is what sets Utah apart. There is no state standard deduction. Instead, Utah Code 59-10-1018 grants a taxpayer credit based on the federal standard deduction and personal exemptions, and that credit shrinks once income passes a base amount. In the phase-out range every extra dollar of profit loses part of the credit as well as paying the flat rate, so the real marginal rate is higher than the headline. The 2026 base amounts are indexed and published by the Tax Commission in its return instructions, which could not be opened when this page was checked. That is why the calculator shows no Utah line: an estimate that ignores the credit would overstate the tax, and one that guesses it could be wrong. The state income tax comparison marks Utah the same way.

Paying through the year

Utah does not publish a quarterly voucher schedule for individuals the way the IRS does. Under Utah Code 59-10-516, a penalty is avoided when, by the return due date, you have prepaid the lesser of 90% of the current-year tax or 100% of the prior-year tax. Many freelancers still send Utah payments with each federal quarterly estimate to spread the cost.

The entity-level election

A partnership or an S corporation that is not disregarded can elect to pay Utah tax itself, at the individual rate, on what the statute calls voluntary taxable income (Utah Code 59-10-1403.2). The election is made by paying, no later than the last day of the taxable year, and cannot be undone for that year. A single-member LLC taxed as a sole proprietorship cannot use it. The point is federal: a tax paid by the entity is deductible as a business expense, which bypasses the cap on state and local tax deductions.

LLC fees from the Division of Corporations

Utah sets its filing fees in a fiscal-year schedule rather than in statute, and the schedule published by the Division of Corporations could not be fetched directly today, so this page does not quote a price for the certificate of organization or the annual renewal. Federal figures are unaffected: a married couple with $150,000 of joint business profit owes about $30,990 in federal income and self-employment tax before Utah tax. The LLC cost by state page has the states whose fees were confirmed.

Questions freelancers ask

Why does the calculator show no Utah income tax?

Utah replaces the standard deduction with a taxpayer credit that phases out with income, and the 2026 indexed amounts of that credit could not be read on the Tax Commission site when this page was checked. Rather than show a figure that might be wrong, the calculator leaves Utah tax out. Federal income tax and self-employment tax are complete.

Does Utah require quarterly estimated tax payments from the self-employed?

Utah law does not set a quarterly installment schedule for individuals. To avoid the underpayment penalty, you need to have paid, by the return due date, the lesser of 90% of your 2026 Utah tax or 100% of your 2025 Utah tax. Paying alongside federal estimates is a common way to get there.

Can a Utah S corporation pay state tax at the entity level?

Yes. A partnership or S corporation that is not a disregarded entity can elect to pay Utah tax at the individual rate on its income, by making the payment before the end of the taxable year. The election is irrevocable for that year. The federal S election itself is followed by Utah and saved about $5,312 in our $120,000 example.
