Iowa taxes 2026 income at a flat 3.8 %, and it starts from federal taxable income, so the federal standard deduction, half of self-employment tax and the QBI deduction all shrink the Iowa base before the rate applies. A personal credit of $40 ($80 joint) then comes off the tax. On $75,000 of profit, a single filer owes $1,589 to Iowa and $17,084 in total with federal income and self-employment tax. Most residents also pay a school district surtax, a percentage of the state tax that can reach 20%. Forming an LLC costs $50, and the biennial report $30 online, so five years of state fees come to $125. Iowa follows the S election without an entity tax; at $120,000 of profit the model shows $4,812 of saving after payroll costs.

Few states build their income tax as directly on the federal return as Iowa now does. Since 2025 the state applies a single rate to federal taxable income (Iowa tax rate history), which means every federal deduction a freelancer claims, the QBI deduction included, also lowers the Iowa bill. The 2026 change that matters most for the self-employed is on the payment side: estimated tax is now required only when you expect to owe $1,000 or more on income without withholding, up from $200, and the four due dates fall at the end of April, June, September and January rather than on the federal 15th (Iowa estimated income tax payments).

How a flat rate on taxable income plays out
Because Iowa uses the federal figure after deductions, $75,000 of profit leads to a state tax of $1,589 for a single filer, and a married couple with the same profit pays $1,060 thanks to the larger federal deduction. At $120,000, the single filer's Iowa tax is $2,861. These amounts leave out the school district surtax. Each district sets its own percentage of state tax liability, capped at 20%, and Appanoose County adds a 1% emergency medical services surtax on the same basis (Iowa tax and fee descriptions). A 10% district surtax on $1,589 would add about $159.
An LLC that costs little to keep
The Certificate of Organization costs $50 and the biennial report $30 when filed online, due between January 1 and April 1 of odd-numbered years (Iowa Secretary of State fees). Spread over its two-year cycle, that is $15 a year, and there is no franchise or minimum tax. Compare with other states in the LLC cost guide. A sole proprietor who never forms the LLC pays none of these fees, and Iowa taxes the profit exactly the same way either way: the entity changes liability, not the income tax. One consequence of the federal starting point is worth spelling out. At $75,000 of profit the federal QBI deduction is $10,720, and that amount never reaches the Iowa base either.
Payroll for an S corp owner
An S corporation owner who pays a salary also pays Iowa unemployment tax. For 2026 the taxable wage base fell to $20,400 from $39,500, and new employers start at 1 % (Iowa Workforce Development, 2026 rates), so the model charges $204 on a $50,000 salary. With that cost and $2,000 of payroll and filing expenses, the election still saves $4,812 at $120,000 of profit. Iowa also lets partnerships and S corporations elect a pass-through entity tax each year (Iowa PTET). The reasonable salary calculator helps set the salary side.
