Nevada has no personal income tax and no corporate income tax, so a self-employed person living and working there pays only the federal bill on business profit: on $75,000 of profit, a single filer owes $15,495 of self-employment tax and federal income tax, or $3,874 per quarterly payment, about 21 % of profit. At $120,000, the total is $28,462. The state collects instead through fees: every LLC files an initial list and then an annual list of managers or members, and renews a State Business License each year, which costs more for a corporation than for an LLC. Commerce Tax starts only above several million dollars of Nevada revenue, and the Modified Business Tax applies to payroll. With no state tax on either side, the S corp election at $120,000 of profit and a $50,000 salary saves about $5,312 a year before Nevada's higher license fee for corporations. The Articles of Organization and annual list fees could not be opened on an official page today.

No tax return goes to Carson City for a sole proprietor's income, and no state estimated payments are due. What replaces the income tax is a set of business fees and taxes that do not look at profit. The one that reaches every LLC is the State Business License fee: $200 a year for an LLC and every other non-corporate business, $500 for a corporation, paid with the initial list and renewed with each annual list by the last day of the anniversary month (Nevada SOS, State Business License FAQ). A Nevada corporation taxed as an S corp therefore pays $300 a year more for its license than an LLC making the same election.

Setting money aside without a state line
With no state income tax, the set-aside is the federal one. Self-employment tax applies to almost all of the profit, federal income tax applies after the standard deduction and the QBI deduction, and the result for $75,000 is 21 % of profit. At $200,000 the rate climbs to 27 %, because the federal brackets do the work alone. If you moved to Nevada from a taxing state during 2026, your former state still taxes the income earned while you lived there; the state income tax page covers part-year residents.
Taxes that start with revenue or payroll
The Commerce Tax applies only to businesses with Nevada gross revenue above $4 million in a fiscal year running July 1 to June 30, at a rate set by industry, with the return due 45 days after June 30 (Nevada Department of Taxation, Commerce Tax). A freelancer or small agency will not reach it. The industry rate table was not captured today.
The Modified Business Tax is the one an S corporation owner meets. Once you pay yourself a salary, the company is an employer, and the general business rate is 1.17% of wages, after the first $50,000 of taxable wages in each calendar quarter, which are exempt (Nevada Department of Taxation, Modified Business Tax). A one-owner company with a salary under that quarterly amount owes nothing on it, though it still files the quarterly return. State unemployment insurance applies to the same salary.
Where Nevada formation costs stand
An LLC files Articles of Organization, an initial list and the business license together. The Articles fee and the annual list fee could not be opened on an official page today, because the Secretary of State and legislative sites blocked direct reading, so this page and the calculator leave them blank rather than guess. Look them up on the Secretary of State fee schedule. The LLC cost by state page lists states whose fees were read, and California shows the opposite approach, with a minimum tax on every LLC.
Nevada does not require new LLCs to publish a newspaper notice. Living in Nevada also does not shield income earned in another state: a contractor who works on site in a taxing state may owe that state on the work done there.
